One of the benefits of creating websites without using a content management system is that you can control every aspect of the site right down to the number of requests that are made to compose any given page. This website is a good example of how you can minimise the amount of cruft in a request by employing a build step in the deployment. This site uses the less CSS pre-processor, so it's trivial to combine all of the styles in a single style sheet and then minify the output. The same goes for javascript, and with the whole site being served over Cloudflare, files are delivered from a CDN using the spdy protocol, they're compressed too. This takes a lot of load off of the web server and makes for a much faster site.
